Sioux Falls Women Respond To Binder Buzz

October 17, 2012, 4:55 PM by Perry Groten

Sioux Falls Women Respond To Binder Buzz
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Tuesday night's presidential town hall spawned the latest political catch-phrase to go viral. Republican Mitt Romney's "binders full of women" comment exploded over Facebook and Twitter and has plenty of people talking and tweeting in KELOLAND.

Women are a highly-prized and sought-after voting block in this year's election. So Romney's off-hand remark about "binders full of women" during the debate really struck a chord online and over coffee.

"I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Could you help us find folks?'  And they brought us whole binders full of women," Romney said at the debate Tuesday night.

Romney's debate response to a question about women in the workforce has turned into a coffee shop talking point.

"If he did have women in the binder, he probably really had his thumb on them," Rochelle Schotzko of Sioux Falls said.

"He was seeking, he found a binder full of women who would like the job,"  Barbara Nour of Sioux Falls said.

Some women think the "binders" comment will draw attention to the pay imbalance women face on the job.

"Women have to fight for what they want.  And we can do it, we can do it.  And if that's what's important to us, then we need to go out there and fight for it," Sandy Beckman of Sioux Falls said.

Other women think the social media's seizing upon the binder comment is going way overboard.

"Some of the issues are kind of nonsense as far as I'm concerned," Nour said. "I don't know what the big deal's about."

To the more cynical voters, the binders backlash has turned the presidential race from a three-ring circus into a three-ring binder.

"I want a woman to be President, they know how to balance a budget," Schotzko.

One woman we spoke with questions whether Romney would have ever used the phrase "binders full of men" in any context during the campaign.

But Romney supporters we spoke with say his binders comment hasn't changed their favorable opinion of him.
