Just more than 18 months after he killed South Dakota Correctional Officer Ron "RJ" Johnson during a failed escape attempt, Eric Robert is scheduled to be the seventeenth inmate executed in the state.
Ron Johnson's widow, Lynette Johnson, says people need to keep correctional officers in their thoughts and prayers as well as other victims of Robert Monday night.
Robert was serving an 80-year sentence for kidnapping a young woman out of Meade County.
She also says while the execution may not bring closure to the case, it may provide protection for the other correctional officers who work behind the prison walls.
"The execution for Robert today is a just and right penalty for him. It also keeps the correctional officers a little bit safer to have him gone," Johnson said.
Johnson plans to witness Robert's execution at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. She says her son and daughter will also be present.
