Official Says Two SD Executions In Weeks Is Unusual

Official Says Two SD Executions In Weeks Is Unusual

South Dakota has had only one execution in the past 65 years. Now, two death row inmates are to die within a matter of weeks.

Richard Dieter with the Death Penalty Information Center says it's likely due largely to coincidence. He says South Dakota has few people on death row and few executions, and now there are a couple of cases in which inmates have waived appeals. He says it's an anomaly.

Fifty-year-old Eric Robert is to die at 10 p.m. Monday for the slaying of a prison guard. He asked to be put to death, saying he would kill again.

Sixty-year-old Donald Moeller is to be executed the week of Oct. 28 for a 1990 murder of a 9-year-old girl. He asked that appeals on his behalf be dropped.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
The year Moeller killed Becky O'Connell was incorrect in this Associated Press story. It happened in 1990, not 1999 as first reported.
