You've likely seen the majestic moves of ballet dancers on the big screen in movies. But ballet in a Sioux Falls exercise class? Ur Fit Journey's barre burn class uses a ballet barre, along with some ballerina-like moves. It's not too much of a stretch for Kari Beckendorf
"I started when I was four and went all the way through until I graduated," Beckendorf said.
Beckendorf missed ballet and encouraged the owner of Ur Fit Journey to start a barre burn class.
"It is a class you can find around the country, especially in the bigger cities. So it's really great we can bring that here and hopefully people find the benefits of why it's becoming such a popular class," Ur Fit Journey Owner Stacey Niewenhuis said.
If you're anything like me, you're not the most graceful person in the world, so the class might look a little intimidating. But Niewenhuis says you should try it out. The main point is to have fun and get a different type of workout.
"Balance and stability will increase and overall strength because you're holding yourself up," Niewenhuis said.
Niewenhuis also incorporates Pilates, along with weighted medicine balls.
"Women don't want to bulk up. This class definitely promotes the lengthening and working from your core out," Niewenhuis said.
And while you may think of ballet as a slower-paced dance, ballerinas in this class should be ready to burn some calories.
"The movements are slow sometimes, but then we pick it up with a little bit of cardio. So it's not a typical ballet class," Beckendorf said.
It's an atypical ballet class where participants not only hope to learn a few moves but also get into shape.
The classes are held on Monday and Thursdays at Ur Fit Journey in downtown Sioux Falls.
