Fire Prevention Week

October 9, 2012, 3:35 AM by Austin Hoffman

Fire Prevention Week

It's National Fire Prevention Week across the nation and fire officials in South Dakota have a safety message they want to send out.

State Fire Marshal Paul Merriman says now is a great time to sit down with your family and come up with not one but at least two escape plans if your home were to start on fire.

Merriman said fires can be unpredictable and move much faster than most people realize. A planned escape route could easily be blocked by fire and it’s always best to have another way out.

And while you may think something like will this will never happen to you, the numbers might change your mind. The National Fire Protection Association says that nearly 370,000 homes burned last year with nearly 2,700 deaths.
