SHERMAN, SD -
Fire crews investigate a blaze that caused a series of small explosions and torched a trailer home in the small town of Sherman early Sunday morning.
The thick smoke filled the chilly air above Sherman, as fire crews watched for any hotspots in Jeanette Smit's trailer home.
"It just kind of escalated into a big mess now," Smit said.
The blaze broke out around 1:00 a.m., inside a van filled with ammunition that went off during the fire. It caused series of small explosions just north of the Silver Bullet Bar.
It wasn't long before the flames spread to the trailer.
"I am just kind of shocked. [We] just bought the van today at an auction," Smit said.
The scene is all too familiar for Smit, who says the smell of smoke takes her right back to the first time she saw a large scale fire rip through her property.
"When I was growing up, we lost our house to a fire. It was actually about this time of year. It's just kind of an ironic thing," Smit said.
She says the ammunition was left in the van by the previous owner and she didn't have a chance to remove it. And while the van and trailer are a total loss, she says it could have been much worse.
The trailer was used to store woodworking tools and other items. It was not being lived in at the time of the fire.
No one was hurt and the cause is still under investigation.
