Aurora County, Dairy Family, Settle For $1.28M
PLANKINTON, SD -

Aurora County and a South Dakota dairy farming family have settled a decade-old lawsuit with a $1.28 million agreement.

Thompson Farms says the southeastern South Dakota county put them out of business by imposing a cap on the county's number of dairy cattle in the late 1990s.

Aurora County plans to issue bonds to pay the settlement. A separate lawsuit determined that its insurer is not obligated to pay the claim.

Sioux Falls attorney Mark Meierhenry says Keith and Paul Thompson are pleased the lawsuit has finally come to an end.

Meierhenry says the Thompsons gave up accrued interest and agreed not to further contest legal expenses as part of the agreement.
