Skunks Moving Into Aberdeen; Likely Due To Drought

October 3, 2012, 6:46 AM

ABERDEEN, SD -

Aberdeen is the latest South Dakota city to report problems with an influx of skunks, likely due to the drought.

Animal Control Officer John Weaver says he typically handles about two of the smelly animals a month, but he's had to deal with more than a dozen in just the past three weeks.

Weaver has run out of traps and set up a waiting list for people who spot skunks. The same thing has happened in Pierre. Officials in both cities say the drought likely has the animals coming in search of food and water.

Skunks are not only odorous - they also are a big transmitter of rabies.
