Dakotas Tribe Receive DOJ Grants For Public Safety

September 27, 2012, 4:32 PM

BISMARCK, ND -

Three tribes in the Dakotas have been awarded more than $2 million in grants from the Department of Justice to enhance public safety on reservations.

The U.S. Attorney's office for the District of North Dakota announced Thursday that the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate were awarded the grants to help address violence against women and other public safety issues.

The Department of Justice is awarding more than 200 grants to more than 110 American Indian and Alaska Native nations for public safety.

Acting Associate Attorney General Tony West says in a news release that the awards show the department's ongoing commitment to help stop crime in Indian Country.
