Report Says SD Unlikely To Have Major Oil Boom
PIERRE, SD -

A study done by Gov. Dennis Daugaard's office says South Dakota will not experience a boom in oil production like the one now occurring in North Dakota.

The study concludes that the most likely scenario is for South Dakota's oil production to remain steady at 1.6 million barrels of oil a year. Even under the most optimistic scenario, South Dakota production will rise only to 6.5 million barrels a year a decade from now.

In contrast, North Dakota last year produced 152 million barrels of oil.

Officials from the governor's office presented their study to a legislative committee that is also studying the possibility of increased oil production in South Dakota and possible impacts on the state. The lawmakers are considering changes in state laws dealing with oil production.
