Flu Shot Via A Shorter Needle

September 26, 2012, 5:07 PM by Casey Wonnenberg

Flu Shot Via A Shorter Needle

If long needles make you nervous, you no longer need to fear the flu shot.  There's a new, less painful option this flu season.

Doctors are using a new short-needle flu shot called Fluzone Intradermal.  It gives flu shots just under the skin, rather than deeper in the muscle like standard flu shots.

Not only is the needle less intimidating, but some patients say they don't have the deep muscle ache associated with a standard flu shot. Plus, more people can get the intradermal shot compared to the flu mist.

"The spray is a live vaccine, so people who are immunocompromised, pregnant woman can't have it. It's mainly for people between 18 and 64-years-old that can have that one that don't have any health issues," Sanford Health Dr. Jorge Patino said.

To help you stay healthy, KELO TV is teaming up with Lewis Drug to hold a flu shot clinic Thursday.  Just stop by any Sioux Falls Lewis Drug store between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.  The cost is $28; it's free with a Medicare card.  The intradermal shot will not be available.
