Training Helps Responders Prepare For Real Emergencies

Training Helps Responders Prepare For Real Emergencies
MITCHELL, SD -

Emergency crews battled several different hazmat scenarios during intense training Saturday in Mitchell.

Nearly 50 men and woman from Aurora, Davison and Hanson Counties participated in the hazardous materials exercises.  The agencies responded to an explosion, a tank truck mishap and an evacuation of effected personnel.

Organizers say it provides opportunities for crews to evaluate their current response plans.

"You kind of get out of your comfort zone when you are doing these things, but that's the idea. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will get at it and you will handle the situation better," Davison County Emergency Manager Jim Montgomery said.

At least one exercise had to be re-located because of a county-wide burn ban.
