CFB: U-Mary Rallies To Down SMSU
MARSHALL, MN -

The University of Mary scored 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to stun Southwest Minnesota State 43-24 on Saturday night in Marshall.

The victory pushes UMarys record to 3-0 overall, 3-0 NSIC, while SMSU drops to 1-2 overall, 1-2 NSIC.

Dariouse Gravely led the Marauders with 150 yards rushing and one touchdown on 26 carries, while Craig Bagnell completed 20 of 31 pass attempts for 199 yards and three touchdown passes.  UMary finished the game 9 of 13 on third-down conversions

SMSU held a 24-17 lead with four minutes left in the third quarter, but a missed SMSU field goal kept it a one possession game and using a strong wind in the final quarter, UMary was able to take advantage to earn the victory.

Following the missed field goal, SMSU had just 13 yards of total offense on its final five possessions.

SMSUs Tyler Peschong completed 13 of 29 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns, while Warren Matthews added a season-high 78 yards rushing on 11 carries.  A total of nine different SMSU players caught a pass with Tyler Erickson leading the way with three receptions for 41 yards.

Tate Bunkers led the SMSU defense with 12 tackles, while J.J. Bobrowicz added nine tackles with one for loss.

UMary opened the games scoring as Craig Bagnell scored on a 7-yard run with nine minutes and 54 seconds left in the first quarter, capping a 59-yard, eight-play drive on the Marauders opening possession.

SMSU answered back just two plays later to tie the game as Tyler Peschong found Warren Matthews on a screen pass and the senior running back did the rest, breaking free for a 70-yard touchdown reception at the 9:04 mark.

The Marauders regained the lead later in the quarter as Tyler Ryan booted a 30-yard field goal with 2:53 left to make the score 10-7.

SMSU threatened to take its first lead of the game early in the second quarter, moving the ball to the UMary 8-yard line, but a critical sack stalled the Mustang drive.  Lance Schuveiller, who kicked the game-winning field goal last week, came through again and drilled a career-long 42-yard field with 11:52 remaining in the half to tie the game at 10-10.

Following punts by both squads, UMary took over midway through the quarter and moved the ball to the SMSU 25-yard line, but SMSUs Joe Stupka intercepted Bagnell at the 2-yard line to end the scoring threat.

The Mustang offense then took over and put together one of its most impressive drives of the young season, moving 98 yards on 13 plays, with Peschong connecting with Anthony Dean on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 1:11 left in the half to take a 17-10 halftime lead.

UMary started the second half strong, putting together an impressive 75-yard drive into the wind with Bagnell completing the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass on third-and-16 to tie the game at 17-17 with 10:05 on the clock.

Peschong quickly led SMSU down the field on the next drive to put the Mustangs back on top.  Peschong was 4 for 4 on the drive, including tossing a 33-yard touchdown pass to Abe Kos to make the score 24-17 midway through the quarter.

SMSU maintained the momentum as Donovan Woods intercepted Bagnell on UMarys first play of the next drive, setting up the Mustangs at the SMSU 47-yard line.  SMSU was able to move the ball down to the UMary 15-yard line, but the drive stalled following a one-yard rush and two incomplete passes.  Schuveiller entered the game to try and give SMSU a 10-point lead, but his field goal missed wide left.

The Mustang defense was able to force another UMary punt late in the third quarter, but SMSU was stopped on its next possession and was forced to punt at its own 9-yard line into a strong wind.

Following a 28-yard punt, UMary moved quickly moved down the field and scored five plays later on a Bagnell 10-yard touchdown pass to Nick Jolliffe to tie the game at 24-24 with 12:34 left in the game.

The UMary defense forced a Mustang three-and-out and then quickly regained the lead on its next possession as Gravely broke free on a 44-yard touchdown run to make the score 31-24 with 10:08 on the clock.

SMSU was forced to punt again after three plays and the Marauders answered once again to build a 37-24 lead with 4:19 remaining on a Bagnell to Bryan Sandy 6-yard touchdown pass.

Following a Peschong interception deep in SMSU territory, the Marauders closed the scoring on an Evan Gross 9-yard run with 2:53 remaining.

UMary finished the game with 428 yards of total offense, including 229 on the ground.  UMary entered the game with just 29 total yards rushing in its first two games.

SMSU ended the night with 345 yards of offense, including 115 rushing yards.

Southwest Minnesota State will continue action next Saturday, Sept. 22, taking on Minnesota, Crookston (0-3, 0-3 NSIC) with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. at Widseth Field.
