Fall Colors Arrive Early In Spearfish Canyon

September 14, 2012, 6:06 PM by Derek Olson

Fall Colors Arrive Early In Spearfish Canyon
SPEARFISH, SD -

While the calendar may say it's still summer, signs of fall are everywhere.  People from around the world are already flocking to Spearfish Canyon to see the leaves change.

Nature's fireworks show is beginning to pop in Spearfish Canyon, which is already hosting a steady stream of visitors.

"We actually had our calendars booked for a trip this fall and our destination was unknown until we looked at the weather.  The weather looked good when we left so we came out here," Jeff Vlaminck of Rochester, Minnesota, said.

"I was here back when I was in 10th grade back with my parents, so I'm just sitting here trying to remember what I saw then and I'm glad to be back," Lores Vlaminck said.

Right now, the colors are at a little more than 50 percent, but for guests, the views are still spectacular.

"I think it's awesome!  Beautiful scenery," Jeff said.

"absolutely.  Get on your bike, bicycle, car, whatever and get out here!" Lores said.

But the canyon is more than just a regional draw.

"There's some beautiful scenery, which is why we've come to Spearfish Canyon to have a look," Geoff King of London said.

King says that on a day like this, the fall colors aren't the only thing to enjoy.

"It's nice to have a really good day with a blue sky and a hot sun.  We don't see too much of that back in England," King said.

The hot and dry weather is actually causing the colors to change more than a week ahead of schedule.  But few seem to mind.

"This is day one and we're planning on spending three days out here then heading back to Minnesota," Jeff said.

"I have a feeling that come Sunday, we won't want to go back," Lores said.

If you want to get out and see the fall leaves for yourself, you still have a little time.  Peak colors are anticipated to pop around next weekend.
