SD Ag Secretary Disappointed By Dairy's Demise

September 14, 2012, 9:24 AM

ALEXANDRIA, SD -

South Dakota Agriculture Secretary Walt Bones says the apparent demise of a proposed large dairy project in southeastern South Dakota is a lost opportunity for farmers.

Developers of the proposed 7,000-head Hanson County Dairy have withdrawn a request for a state water permit, after a judge ordered the county to cancel a zoning permit.

Bones says farmers could have made money selling crops to the dairy. He says he's disappointed.

A group of area residents fought the dairy at both the county and state levels, fearing harm to the environment.
