Roosevelt Reaching New Heights

September 12, 2012, 10:10 PM by Matt Holsen

Roosevelt Reaching New Heights
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

One of the most exciting moments in a volleyball game is when a spike results in a kill shot. The crowd goes wild and sometimes the momentum shifts.

Roosevelt's team has become queens of the kill and that's part of the reason why they're unbeaten in South Dakota.

No doubt it helps when you have the tallest kids on the court.

"We have a huge team. I know I wouldn't want to play against us," Maggie DeJong said.

"Well I've never done the average but we're probably averaging about six foot on my front line right now," head coach Holly Lynch said.

From DeJong to Tagyn Larson to Ashley Wilson and Ashley Beaner, it's hard to get anything by the Rough Riders and it's even tougher to stop them, especially when they go in for the kill.

"If it's a solid kill we go crazy. The fans will go crazy. There's so much energy in the gym. It's fun to get a good kill," Larson said.

Larson, a sophomore, teamed up with the now junior DeJong for more than 500 kills last season.

But it's not all their focused on. If they hope to end a string of runner-up finishes, they know other aspects of the team's game must also be top-notch.

"We're tired of getting second place. We want to work for the best. That's why we condition a lot. We've started weight training this year. That's a new thing for our program. We're just working our butts off to try and get to that number one," Beaner said.

While no one on this roster has a state title under her belt, a 6-0 start against Class AA teams has Roosevelt thinking 2012 might be the Rough Riders time.

"I think this would be a really good year. We have all the right players. We have good attackers, good servers, good blockers. We're going to try and go all the way," DeJong said.

Number twp Roosevelt will face a tough test Thursday night when they travel to third ranked O'Gorman. The Knights are also unbeaten in South Dakota play knocking off top ranked Aberdeen Central on Tuesday.
