Survivor's Holly Hoffman: The Next Chapter

September 12, 2012, 10:12 PM by Don Jorgensen

Survivor's Holly Hoffman: The Next Chapter
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Two years ago, you probably didn't know her name, but ever since appearing on CBS Survivor, Holly Hoffman has made quite the name for herself.

The mother of three from the small town of Eureka, just recently wrote a book, has her own web site and started her own business. But, you haven't heard the last of her.

It's been exactly two years Survivor Nicaragua and that's when Holly became nationally known.

If you remember, after a brief meltdown in one of the episodes, Holly almost quit. But thanks to some convincing from former Dallas Cowboy coach Jimmy Johnson, who was also one of the contestants, she decided to stick it out.

And good thing, because Holly played the game well and was one of the last ones voted off the island, one day before the finals.

"When I was voted off the show on day 38, the next day Jeff Probst came up to me and he pulled me into a room and said 'I have a feeling you're going to become a public speaker, people are going to ask you to speak.' My first response was there's no way I'm going to get up in front of people and speak," Holly said.

At first Holly said she wasn't very good at it, but after doing a little research, this one time survivor is now very busy.

"Basically I focus on attitude, confidence, determination, desire, faith and perseverance," Holly said.

And those six words that she talks about to students and other service groups, are also why she decided to write a book. It's called Your Winner Within. It's about life lessons she's learned over the years.

"I actually grew up in an abusive alcoholic family, I took that experience and turned it into a positive experience something that I've learned from my father, basically how my dad gave up in life, he just couldn't beat the addiction of alcoholism," Holly said.

She writes about that and other aspects of her life, like being a mother of three. But she wanted the book to be an inspiration for others.

"I speak, I give the message then I feel like I want people to take the book, take it home so when they are having a bad day they can look up a quote I said in my speech, they can read the chapter on attitude because we all have to work on our attitude everyday. We all have different personalities, but they are things that occur every single day, something might bring us down, or someone might say something bad about us and that's something we need to focus on," Holly said.

Because Jimmy Johnson played an instrumental role in convincing Holly not to quit Survivor, she asked him to right the forward for her book. But her book isn't about the CBS show.

"There are a few points about surviving, about how I was in the middle of nowhere all by myself and I had to survive, most of my adult life I have had people surround me and support me and so for the most part I was on my own and had to learn how to change my attitude and believe in myself," Holly said.

Holly says Survivor gave her confidence to dare to dream.

"In life it's not where you came from it's where you're going, I want people to realize you can accomplish anything that you really set your mind to doing," Holly said.  "Small town girl from South Dakota who just took the opportunity to do something and look what happened, a challenge in your life can turn into an opportunity if you just let it."

Holly says if CBS asks her to come back for another Survivor season, she wouldn't hesitate. As for her future, she wants to write another book and maybe one day run for public office.  If you'd like to a get a copy of Holly's new book log onto her website HollyHoffman.org
