Fire Danger A Threat Tuesday, Throughout Fall

September 10, 2012, 6:14 PM by Brian Karstens

Fire Danger A Threat Tuesday, Throughout Fall
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Fire weather concerns will continue again on Tuesday in parts of KELOLAND.

Conditions like what we had on Monday are the worst for fire danger.  With strong south winds, low relative humidity and temperatures in the 90s, fires can be a real problem, especially considering the drought conditions.  While fire danger will be high much of the fall season as long as the drought continues, there are specific weather patterns that will make this problem more intense and could cycle several times.

Monday and Tuesday's set-up is classic for fire weather.  Usually the highest fire danger occurs ahead of a cold front where strongest southerly winds can be found.  Since Gulf of Mexico moisture is lacking ahead of these fronts, the relative humidity can drop below 20 percent.  Finally, the hottest temperatures are usually found right ahead of these fronts as well, making all of the other ingredients that much worse.

These kinds of conditions can be expected to cycle the next several weeks if the current weather pattern continues.
