Sioux Falls Breaks Ground On Events Center

August 30, 2012, 9:58 PM by Kelly Bartnick

Sioux Falls Breaks Ground On Events Center
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Construction is officially underway on the new Sioux Falls Events Center. The $115 million project will take about two years to complete.

Thursday's ceremony brought out a big crowd for what city officials called a historic event.

“The bulk of the men and women to build this facility, live work and play in Sioux Falls,” Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether said before a large crowd on Thursday.

Dirt work has already begun, but city officials held the ceremonial groundbreaking of Sioux Falls' anticipated entertainment venue and gathering place Thursday afternoon.

The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center is being built at the site of the Sioux Falls Arena and Convention Center.

“I think 'The Den' is a good name. A lot of fun will be done in those halls,” Sanford CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft said.

Sanford Health is one of the three exclusive sponsors of the new facility, along with PREMIER Bankcard and First PREMIER Bank.

Along with the building sponsors, city council representatives, past civic leaders and more all gathered in the shadow of a once mighty Sioux Falls Arena to celebrate the new building they believe will become even more of a symbol in Sioux Falls.

Voters handily approved the project last year.

“I was so proud of the people of Sioux Falls that day. And I still am,” Huether said.

This type of project and the questions surrounding it have been in the works for more than ten years. There have been opponents, but the supporters celebrated Thursday.

“It was to see our young people and our young families step forward and say it's time for us to step forward and take control of our community,” Terry Baloun said.

Baloun sat on one of the former events center committees.

Much of the prep work has already been done by contractors. The new building is expected to seat 12,000 people.
