Railcats Rout Pheasants

The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored early and often en route to an 11-4 defeat of the Sioux Falls Pheasants on Saturday night at the U.S. Steel Yard.

The RailCats never looked back after collecting three straight hits in the first inning to score two runs. Mike Massaro and Brian Kolb had back-to-back RBI singles.

Nine men batted in a five-run second inning against Pheasants starter Mark Michael (6-7). A single, hit batter and walk loaded the bases before Massaro notched his second RBI hit. Two batters later, Craig Maddox cracked a two-run single, and Mike Rohde followed with a two-run double.

Michael lasted four innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out one.

The RailCats added four more runs in the eighth. The Pheasants finally scored in the ninth. Jared Bolden blooped a two-run double, and Reggie Abercrombie drove in two with a single.

Morgan Coombs (5-7) led a dominant pitching performance with 6 1/3 shutout innings with six hits allowed. He walked three and struck out four.

Reggie Abercrombie was 2-for-5 with two RBI, the only Pheasant hitter with multiple hits.

The finale of the three-game series begins at 2:10 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and
