USD Offense Making Strides

August 16, 2012, 10:40 PM by Jim Madalinsky

USD Offense Making Strides
VERMILLION, SD -

Energy, Enthusiasm, Excitement and Effort.

"4 E's" is the message first year Head Coach Joe Glenn has instilled upon this years Coyote squad. A philosophy he hopes masks what the team lacks in another E...Experience.

"We are a young team, but that's not always bad. They've got alot of enthusiasm, alot of excited young guys full of energy and great effort and I think you overcome alot when you have all the E's," USD Head Coach Joe Glenn said.

A philosophy that has caught on with team.

"The attitude and energy with this program is higher than its ever been and its just through the roof," Senior Wide Receiver Will Powell said.

Powell has taken it upon himself to be a leader on offense this season, but it will be up to sophomore Josh Vander Maten to carry the load under center.

"Josh has all the talent, all the tools, but one thing you have to really coach a QB on is not turning the ball over," Glenn said.

"He is so athletic and has so much talent. He's probably one of the fastest guys on the team and he can throw it like 80 yards which is exciting for me on the deep ball, but he's really stepped up," Powell said.

Vander Maten's speed plus the emergence of running back Jasper Sanders could make the Coyote attack a force to be reckoned with. Sanders, paired with returning rushing leader Marcus Sims creates a 1-2 punch in the Coyote backfield.

"We compliment each others games. He's more of a slasher while I'm more of a hit the hole and go guy. I think it's going to compliment the run game for us and make things easier," Marcus Sims said.

The jump to the Missouri Valley won't be easy though and the Coyotes know it. In fact, they weren't surprised at all to hear they were picked to finish 8th in the conference.

"We know we have talent, we know we have guys that can step up and make plays. We are young especially on the line we lost alot of guys but the young guys have done just a great job of getting better everyday," Senior WR Will Powell said.

"There's nothing wrong with being the underdog and we're ok with that and we're going to come out and try to do our best to prove people wrong and it'll only fuel the fire," Sophomore QB Josh Vander Maten said.
