The rain last week already doubled our rain total in Sioux Falls when compared to all of last month, and more rain is on the way. It could be a sign of things to come during August.
While our hot July is behind us, the heat will not be forgotten anytime soon. Since 1988, we've had six Julys when the average temperature was at 87 degrees or warmer. Granted that's not as warm as this past July, it might give us an idea as to what to expect the rest of August.
Of the six Augusts that followed, four had highs at or slightly below and below average, while the other two were well above average.
But the rain is what stands out. Rain totals during those times range from a low of just below an inch and a half to as much as eight and a quarter inches. The six Augusts averaged to an above rain total of nearly three and a half inches. Even the hot Augusts of 1988 had a rain total at four inches.
So don't be surprised if you start seeing more chances for rain in the forecast over the next several weeks.
