Latest Phishing Scam Uses BBB's Name

August 1, 2012, 5:02 PM by Nicole Winters

Latest Phishing Scam Uses BBB's Name
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The latest email phishing scam targeting thousands of businesses is using the Better Business Bureau's name.  While many people may know it's not legit, but the BBB still finds it frustrating.

Email phishing scams are nothing new to Jans Corporation owner Dale Jans.

"It seems like everyday, we see something related to a similar situation.  People are trying to get information from you," Jans said.

He isn't easily fooled, but the latest did have him look twice.

"It did have the Better Business Bureau's name on it, but it didn't pertain to anything that I was familiar with," Jans said.

"It’s a huge scam that we're very concerned with the Bureau because it's so far reaching," Better Business Bureau State Director Jessie Schmidt said.

Schmidt says the scam tells a business they have an existing complaint against them, and the BBB is following up. It then asks for you to click on a link.

"What that link does is it downloads some viruses to your computer looking to get sensitive bank information," Schmidt said.

The scam can easily trick people because in the subject line of the email says it's from the BBB. Luckily for Jans, he's a member of the BBB board and heard about the scam before it popped up on his computer.

"He was somewhat aware and sent me an email first thing this morning," Schmidt said.

That's what Schmidt wants others to do. If you get this email, don't click on the link; delete it and inform the BBB.

And if you're not sure if it's legit, Jans says his motto is just don't chance it.

"If it isn't something that you recognize or something you're expecting, I just delete it. That's about all you can do," Jans said.

Schmidt says the scam is hitting members and non BBB members.  She says if you've clicked on the link, you should run virus protection software on your computer.
