SD Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week

July 30, 2012, 5:22 AM

SD Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week
PIERRE, SD -

South Dakota health officials say the state is joining the rest of the country and more than 170 countries Aug. 1-7 in celebrating the 20th Annual World Breastfeeding Week.

The Department of Health's Rhonda Buntrock says the commemoration offers a good reminder that breastfeeding is the ideal method of infant feeding.

South Dakota has not yet met any of the Healthy People 2020 goals related to breastfeeding. They include increased initiation, exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding. They also include such supportive practices as the percentage of employers offering lactation support programs.

The annual observance commemorates the August 1990 Innocenti Declaration made by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund  to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding to improve the health of babies around the world.
