SD Residents Can Soon Apply For Pine Beetle Help

SD Residents Can Soon Apply For Pine Beetle Help
PIERRE, SD -

Residents of South Dakota's Black Hills hoping to learn whether their trees are infested with mountain pine beetles can ask the state to survey their properties starting Aug. 1.

The state Department of Agriculture's Division of Resource Conservation and Forestry will accept applications through Sept. 17 for the selective program. Officials say that not everyone who applied last year was accepted because there were so many applicants.

The goal of the survey is to identify and mark trees that are infested with the beetles so that homeowners can get the trees treated. The service is provided for landowners with at least a 10-acre parcel located in the Black Hills. Landowners with smaller parcels can form groups with neighbors until they hit the 10-acre mark.
