People Headed To Batman Showings

July 20, 2012, 9:54 PM by Kelly Bartnick

People Headed To Batman Showings
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The movies went on in Sioux Falls Friday.

But even before Leslie Reid walked inside, she found herself having to explain the violence associated with the latest “Batman” film to her son.

“I had my tickets already. Had I not done that, maybe I wouldn't have come today,” Reid said. “I hate to have to tell my child about it and say, ‘Why would someone do this? You're going to a movie. It's for fun.’”

“It was a shock when I heard it this morning,” Daniel Ward said as he walked through the Century 14 parking lot headed to the 6:15 p.m. “Batman” showing.

“I'll be focusing on the movie and having a good time with my friends,” Ward’s friend Veronica Ford said.

Both Ward and Ford say this is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. It’s the end to the “Batman” trilogy.

In Sioux Falls, all signs pointed to a safe outing after a shooting at a theater in Aurora, Colorado early Friday morning that theatre officials call calculated, but isolated.

“We play to 250-255 million people a year with very little incidents. The theaters are safe. It's a safe environment,” Texas-based Cinemark CEO Timothy Warner said early Friday morning.

Cinemark operates two theaters in Sioux Falls where showings continued Friday.

“I feel really bad for them. I'm praying for the families today. I hope that the same thing doesn't happen again,” Ford said.

And she is counting on it not happening, except on the screen in the movies.

“It makes you not want to go out and have fun and take your kids to movies. But you can't just sit at home and do nothing,” Reid said.

Police have confirmed 12 dead and 59 injured during the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shootings.
