A new company announced Tuesday that it plans to bring more than 100 jobs to Vermillion.
Alleviant, which handles medical billing and collections, has announced that it is expanding its operations within South Dakota.
Vermillion officials say they are excited about bringing a new industry to the city.
"It would definitely put them in the top tier. The University (of South Dakota) is around 1,200 employees and then after that the next largest employers are around that 200 to 250, but it definitely puts them in that top tier of employers," Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Director Steve Howe said.
Howe says the 120 jobs Alleviant plans to bring to Vermillion by the end of 2013 are good news for the economy.
Alleviant is a new subsidiary of Chicago-based Navigant Healthcare. The company is one of the fastest-growing medical billing and collection companies in the country. It already employees 100 workers in Mitchell and more than 40 in Plankinton.
Howe says the new jobs in Vermillion will compliment some of the programs being offered at nearby University of South Dakota.
"I think there are some good partnerships with some of the programs on campus. There are opportunities for students, once they graduate to stay here, so it's a great win for everyone,” Howe said.
Officials say Alleviant is not only bringing jobs to Vermillion, but it is also bringing diversity to the workforce.
"One of our primary goals is diversifying the industry mix. We're an education community and we have a lot of service sector supporting the education community, but we needed more of the white collar, back-office types of jobs to round out the local economy," Howe said.
And that's why economic development officials say this expansion is a positive sign for local workers looking for a job.
Alleviant will hold an open house at its new Vermillion location at 907 North Norbeck Street Wednesday night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the evening.
It plans to start operations this fall.
