With summer officially here, it's a good chance to enjoy the nice weather and get in a workout. A class at Lake Alvin this summer allows people to learn a new summer hobby that can improve your mental and physical health.
Cool water, hot sun and kayakers are a distant sight for many in KELOLAND.
"I'm always up for a new adventure," Sarah Ailts said.
A class through Avera's Fitness Center is Ailts' first experience in a kayak.
"I used to work up in the Boundary Waters in college. So I have canoeing in my blood. But I wanted to give this a try," Ailts said.
"If somebody stays with the same thing day after day after day, it becomes stagnant and boring. Then sometimes we don't find that time to do our exercise," Avera Outdoor Educator Mark Greeno said.
Greeno says kayaking is a great upper body and core exercise. It's also a chance to mix up your workouts.
"When you cross-train, you are using different parts of your body," Greeno said.
Greeno says getting out and exercising in the wilderness not only helps you physically but also mentally.
"I think in this day and age where we are living in a fast-paced world. It's really important to get out and get in the outdoors. You can hear in the background how nice it is," Greeno said.
"It was great; just peaceful and nice to get out with a group of people but also kind of on your own and enjoying nature," Ailts said.
"Throughout the whole three hours we were doing this, I don't think anyone was thinking about work or problems with the family or this or that. They were just out here enjoying themselves," Greeno said.
It's a wilderness workout that has made waves with several in the class. A couple of them are repeat rowers.
"As long as I can get myself a kayak, I would definitely do it again," Ailts said.
Avera is offering another kayaking class on Thursday morning. The cost is $20 for Avera Fitness Center members and $25 for non-members.
