Fund Set Up To Replace Stolen Bike

April 10, 2012, 5:01 PM by Brady Mallory

Fund Set Up To Replace Stolen Bike
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The story of Bill Loring, a Sioux Falls man with disabilities searching for his stolen bike, struck a chord with a lot of people in South Dakota and beyond wanting to know how to help.

Bill Loring noticed his custom-made, yellow Sun Atlas Deluxe, featuring special brakes, easy-to-use pedals and a basket for his Shih Tzu, Angel, was gone from where he chained it up.

"It's pretty terrible the world has come to that," Tyler Stutson said.

It is easy for a lot of us to take something like this for granted, but a simple bike ride to the store or just around the neighborhood meant the world to Loring.

Stutson wanted to help.  He set up the Bill Loring Fund and pitched in $25 of his own money.  In just a few short hours, the account had more than $100 in donations.

"I've had the mayor contact me this morning about doing what he can to help and he would be a part of it.  People from out of state have contacted me to do what they can as well," Stutson said.

Stutson has never met Loring, but as he put it, he is paying someone else's good deed forward.

"What really got it started is somebody paid for my meal at the drive-thru and that got me thinking if somebody helped me, who can I help?" Stutson said.

Injuries from a motorcycle accident 24 years ago limited Loring's ability to speak and walk on his own.  He uses a wheelchair to get around his apartment building.  Now he only has one reminder of his bike; his only way to get around outside.

"They cut the chains," Loring said while holding up a large chain and padlock he used to secure his bike.

Now he is stuck with an old, rusty bike that he says is hard to use. Stutson wants to raise $1,500 to buy not just one bike, but a couple of back-ups.  He also said a U-lock would be a better security device than an easy-to-cut chain.  Eventually, Stutson hopes to present the money to Loring.

"I'm hoping that with all this support, the word will get out and people will come to their senses and not steal from people who need it the most," Stutson said.

To help, simply go to Voyage Federal Credit Union in Sioux Falls and ask to donate to 'The Bill Loring Fund,' or call 605-338-2533 or 800-370-9555.
