Teachers Delivering HB 1234 Petitions

June 18, 2012, 7:28 AM by Kellee Azar

Teachers Delivering HB 1234 Petitions
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A group of teachers from Sioux Falls are traveling to Pierre Monday morning with a stack of signed petitions to bring House Bill 1234 to a public vote in November.

Lawmakers passed the teacher merit pay bill during the legislative session which gives top teachers bonuses, provides scholarships for new teachers in some areas and gets rid of tenure.

The group needs nearly 16,000 signatures to get the issue added to the ballot for the general election.  They'll hand deliver them to the Secretary of State's office Monday to get them confirmed and counted.

The bus left Sioux Falls around 7 a.m. and plans to stop in Mitchell to pick up more teachers.

We'll let you know what comes of the validation of those petitions.
