Father-Daughter Legislative Duo

June 12, 2012, 6:07 AM by Austin Hoffman

Father-Daughter Legislative Duo
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

If you had the chance to drive around Sioux Falls, Brandon or Renner before the primary election, you might have noticed two signs for different candidates, with the same last name.

Jenna Haggar made history two years ago when she was the youngest female ever elected to South Dakota's Legislature. Now, she could possibly find a different place in the history books; this time, with her father's help.

Haggar's freshman term in Pierre is now behind her. After winning last week's primary election for District 10's republican representative, her name will be on the ballot in November. But she won't be the only Haggar.

"Two years ago my dad encouraged me to run and this year I basically got to return the favor," Jenna said.

Her father, Don, won the second spot in last week's primary for District 10. There's now a chance they'll head to Pierre together in January.

“It's fun to be able to do things together. That’s important to me as a father and as a family.  So yeah, that's rewarding; it is," Don said.

While they both look forward to the prospect of some family bonding at the state's capitol, they agree it's really about the people who voted for them.

"The fact that we each have the last name that's the same, bring more voters to the polls or get more people engaged, then great. But really, it's about the voters," Don said.

"Dad and I are running because we feel we can offer something different than what the typical politician can. What we do is we go out into to the community and find out what the important values are of the people in the neighborhood and our community so that we can truly represent their individual needs," Jenna said.

If they do get elected, they will be the second father-daughter legislative team to serve. There's also a father-son duo; the Novstrups from Aberdeen are currently serving in Pierre.
