Benedictine monks have decided to close a monastery in northeast South Dakota.
Blue Cloud Abbey also served as a retreat center but is closing because a lack of vocations and older community members has made it difficult to bring in new members.
Results from a vote taken May 29 were announced Monday on the monastery's website. Now Abbot Denis Quinkert says they'll take the next few months to help each monk settle into another monastery of his choice.
Quinkert says the monks have been very effective in many areas over the past 62 years and they don't have an answer as to why Blue Cloud hasn't received the needed vocations.
A public farewell gathering is being planned for August 5. Public liturgies will not be held after that date and scheduled retreats will be canceled.
