Mitchell Recount Raises More Questions

June 11, 2012, 12:20 PM by David Brown

Mitchell Recount Raises More Questions
MITCHELL, SD -

The primary recount in Mitchell is causing controversy. After test ballots were counted the first time, now some are contesting the recent recount.

After Tuesday's primary, the Secretary of State's Office reported about 6,100 votes were cast. But later on, the auditor reported that just more than 5,500 votes were cast.  And after Thursday's recount, the official count was around 4,400.

The difference in numbers of people who actually voted on Tuesday is causing the most contention in Davison County.

A group of four people including current Treasurer Brenda Veldheer, unsuccessful mayoral candidates Tara Volesky and Jerald Toomey, and unsuccessful school board candidate Craig A. Guymon are meeting with an attorney Monday to determine the next course of action.

Some say the only thing that will satisfy them is a re-vote.  Candidates have ten days after the election day to file a petition for a re-vote.

Hear from the candidates on what's next for them later today on KELOLAND News.
