Recount Underway In Davison County

Recount Underway In Davison County
MITCHELL, SD -

After a nearly two hour delay, a recount is finally underway in Davison County.

The reason behind the recount is that the auditor's office believes as many as 500 test votes were mistakenly included in the first results from the election on Tuesday.  That could have an impact in the mayor's race in Mitchell and the treasurer's race in Davison County.

The canvassing board had hoped to start counting results from Tuesday's primary at 9:30 a.m.  As they ran testing ballots through the machine, they noticed it was counting too many of the test ballots at once.

A technician from Omaha worked throughout the morning to repair the machine and the recount finally got started around 11:30 a.m.

To ensure accurate results this time, the ballots will be run through twice.

If the machines malfunction again, officials will bring the ballots to Sioux Falls so that they can be counted at the Minnehaha County Auditor's Office.
