Free Summer Lunch Program

May 22, 2012, 4:53 PM by Nicole Winters

Free Summer Lunch Program

For some children, school is the only place to get a well-balanced meal during the school year. The Sioux Falls School District doesn't want that to stop for the summer months. They're hoping their summer lunch program will helps kids stay focused and growing strong.

"My kids actually go to summer school here, so when they're done, we can eat and I don't have to worry about fixing anything at home," Alicia Gruhlke said.

Gruhlke and her kids are taking advantage of the free summer lunch program at Terry Redlin. That's exactly what Child Nutrition Supervisor Joni Davis wants to see.

"We just continue to believe we want to have that option available because we know children need a meal so that they can continue to learn and grow and have fun during the summer," Child Nutrition Supervisor Joni Davis said.

The district is once again offering lunch at select sites through the summer. It's free for kids under 18 and $2.50 for anyone over.

"We would anticipate things we know going on around the community for families and the nation, there might be a need; but we are certainly there and wishing to provide that meal for that child," Davis said.

Last year, the district served an average 600 people per day. While it's beneficial for families in need, Davis says anyone and everyone is welcome to attend.

"We're a place where they can come.  It's safe; they can get their meal," Davis said.

For Gruhlke, it's more of a convenience then anything, but she says a cheap or free nutritional meal goes a long way.

"Every little bit helps," Gruhlke said.

The program is paid for with federal funds.
