Capital One Hiring Hundreds In Sioux Falls

May 2, 2012, 4:48 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Capital One Hiring Hundreds In Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The credit card company with the catchy advertising not only wants to know, "What's in your wallet?" but also what's on your resume.

Capital One credit cards officially cut the ribbon on a new Sioux Falls location Wednesday, taking over the old HSBC building.

Capital One plans to hire 400 new employees this year and still retain the 400 HSBC employees who already worked in the building.

It took Vallorie Petersen a year and a half to land a full-time job. The job she found was in Sioux Falls at Capital One. She helps customer service representatives answer difficult questions while they are on the phone with customers. Petersen started at Capital One just two and a half months ago after she couldn’t find a job in Houston, Texas, and moved to Sioux Falls.

"Had been pretty stressed out previously not able to find a full-time job so this is definitely a better market here and I'm really glad for this opportunity," Petersen said.

Petersen is one of the hundreds of new employees Capital One plans to hire in Sioux Falls.

"Being able to bring 400 additional jobs to Sioux Falls is a great opportunity for the city; it's a great opportunity for Capital One," Capital One Sioux Falls Operations Manager Dave Long said.

South Dakota's Governor and Congressional Delegation, as well as Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether, were on hand Wednesday as Capital One officially opened the Sioux Falls location. They say the expansion is another example of the strong job market in South Dakota.

"This is not only about the expansion of 400 jobs, but it's the retention of 400 jobs. The first step in economic development is to retain the jobs you already have and that's what this thing has done and more," Huether said.

"It puts South Dakota and Sioux Falls on the map as a credit card center," South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard said.

And all of the jobs bring people like Petersen who were struggling to find work in other parts of the country.

"I really enjoy my position here. I enjoy coming to work every day, and Capital One is just a great experience for me," Petersen said.

Capital One has already hired people 225 of the 400 jobs it's adding in Sioux Falls. The company hopes fill the other 175 positions by the end of the year.

At the same time that Capital One is adding jobs here in South Dakota, it is cutting jobs in California.  Capital One announced Wednesday more than 800 workers in Salinas, California, will lose their jobs by 2013 after they decided to close the HSBC location there.
