Local Mother/Daughter Featured In Nat. Magazine

As we approach Mother's Day, kids will be honoring their moms in many different ways.  But in the latest edition of the national magazine, Ladies Home Journal, a local mom honors her daughter.

Thea Miller Ryan and her 16-year-old daughter, Maddy, are featured in a full-page spread on daughters as role models.

Open up May's edition of Ladies' Home Journal and you'll see a Sioux Falls mother-daughter duo featured within the pages.

"Ladies' Home Journal post a question:  'Have you ever learned anything from your daughter?'  And I wrote because I do that. I said, 'Yeah, I learned how to sew from my daughter. And I forgot all about it," Thea said.

But a couple of months later, Thea got a call from the magazine's reporter.

"I was really surprised because basically I was just answering a question on a social media website.  Yeah, it was great," Thea said.

The Ryans are featured in this Mother's Day edition, not because of what Thea has done for Maddy, but rather what Maddy has done for her mom.

"Maddy sews so much and sews all the time at home and it's fun to watch her. One day I said, 'Can you let me try that?'" Thea said.

For Maddy, it was an exercise in patience.

"Even after time after time after time of showing her how to thread the machine, I still have to do it today and it's been quite a long time," Maddy said.

But the whole experience has brought this pair, who was already close, even closer.

"It seems pretty natural to us.  My mom and I are on a pretty good basis all the time. We always teach each other things. I teach her the lingo and she teaches me life lessons," Maddy said.

"It's been a great experience for me because I really realized how much we have to learn from our kids," Thea said.

Last Christmas, Maddy and Thea sewed everyone in their extended family cloth shopping bags.
