Local Events Highlight Severe Weather Week

April 20, 2012, 6:11 PM by Ben Cathey

Local Events Highlight Severe Weather Week

Next week is National Severe Weather Preparedness Week and in South Dakota, it's Severe Weather Awareness Week.

There is a preview on Friday night in Rapid City with a discussion on Black Hills tornadoes.  Next week, there are severe weather training classes in Sioux Falls, Yankton and Brookings.

Next Wednesday, you should hear tornado sirens for a statewide drill.

The experts say don't rely only on the sirens if severe weather hits.  We've heard a lot of recent reports about sirens not going off during recent outbreaks across the country.  Weather radios provide a first-wave of warning and are especially useful at night.

Just in time for Severe Weather Awareness Week, we'll have our KELOLAND Live Doppler HD Spring Special.  We look ahead to this year's severe weather season, look back at the 40th anniversary of the Rapid City flood and much more.

The special airs at 6:30 p.m. central time Monday on KELO-TV.
