It's a workout developed by Navy Seals. But the idea of TRX Suspension Training is now part of a new exercise class in Sioux Falls.
The idea is simple: hanging a rope from the ceiling to work against your own body weight. But Kristy Smith says TRX Suspension Training can be quite difficult.
"It's a unique way to use your body weight and really challenge yourself. As you can see, I'm a little sweaty," Smith said.
Smith dove into the class feet first and now participates twice a week.
"You can make it very, very difficult," Smith said.
"While it seems like it might be much more of a strength building, we definitely can bring up our heart rate very easily too just by moving at a different speed or pace," Niewenhuis said.
Adjusting your footing and body angle also allows you to work different muscles. Plus Niewenhuis' class includes a BOSU ball workout.
"It's during the BOSU section that we bring up the heart rate a little bit more by doing some more cardio moves," Niewenhuis said.
Class instructor Stacey Niewenhuis believes exercises such as this will become more popular because they aren't as limiting as machines.
"Suspension training is all about moving your body in a 3-D space. So it very much mimics the way we move through live every day; we're not restricted," Niewenhuis said.
For Smith, that means using every muscle in her body.
"It's a total body workout, and I get my cardio in. It's 45 minutes and you're done," Smith said.
That is why she's gladly making it a habit to hang out at the gym.
The class is at U R Fit Journey in Downtown Sioux Falls.
