SD Governor Says Plains Snowpack Must Be Monitored

March 14, 2012, 4:12 PM

PIERRE, SD -

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says better monitoring of the plains snowpack is needed to prevent a repeat of last summer's flooding on the Missouri River.

In a meeting with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials Wednesday, Daugaard says a monitoring system for plains snowfall
must be put in place while memories of last year's flooding are fresh.

Brig. Gen. John McMahon, commander of the corps' Northwestern Division, says the agency that manages the Missouri River is
working with other agencies to set up a better system for measuring snow on the plains. He says a good system already exists for measuring the snowpack in the northern Rocky Mountains.

McMahon says conditions look good now because of a drier winter, but he says the weather could change quickly.
