Owner Tried To Stop Jones From Stealing SUV

Owner Tried To Stop Jones From Stealing SUV

The 19-year-old man who led Sioux Falls Police on a high-speed chase that ended with a deadly crash could face life in prison.

Court paperwork says Kyle Jones led police on a pursuit that reached speeds of 80 miles-per-hour Thursday night.

The chase ended when Jones crashed into a minivan and killed the driver, 33-year-old Jade Thie. Jones now faces several charges including manslaughter and underage drinking.

Jones was arrested late Monday afternoon after being released from the hospital following the crash.

He's being held on a half-million dollar bond and facing charges of manslaughter, eluding police, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving and underage drinking.

The man who had his vehicle stolen by Jones is still shaken up by the entire situation, but says he tried to stop Jones shortly after he noticed his Chevy Suburban was stolen.

"I took after my truck," Jason Hendrixson said.

Hendrixson was visiting his mom when he noticed his Chevy Suburban was gone last Thursday night. When he saw someone driving away with it, he ran down the street and tried to stop them.

"Grabbed the back door, then grabbed the front door, knocked on the window and I said, ‘Roll down the window,’ and he kind of just went like that to me," Hendrixson said shrugging his shoulders.

Hendrixson says that's when Jones took off and Hendrixson called police.

The Suburban turned back around and stopped in front of the house across the street.  Hendrixson saw people run out of the home with several bags and that's when officers showed up on the scene.

"And they took off, went down the corner, tried stopping them and then split and that's all I saw," Hendrixson said.

Just ten minutes later, Hendrixson got a call from his friend saying his Suburban was involved in the deadly crash.

Court documents filed over the weekend say that Jones took a breathalyzer at the scene of the crash and had a 0.047 blood alcohol level; it's below the legal limit but still illegal for Jones, who is 19.

The documents go on to say that when police interviewed Jones at the hospital he said, "It was my mistake," when he was talking about the crash. He also said "I don't want to hurt anyone."

When the officers told Jones the driver of the vehicle he hit was dead Jones, "was upset and kept repeating that he would take the consequences for his actions."

Minnehaha State's Attorney Aaron McGowan says that could be life in prison because Jones killed someone while he was committing another felony and running away from police.

"If you're committing a different felony and somebody dies as a result of those actions, you can be held responsible at the first-degree manslaughter level," McGowan said.

Hendrixson is still shaken by the chain of events and says his loss is no comparison to the loss Thie's family is going through right now.

"My truck is replaceable; someone's life is not replaceable. It's just terrible it had to happen this way," Hendrixson said.

Jones was arrested when he was released from the hospital Monday afternoon so Minnehaha County didn't have to pay for his medical bills.

Jones' sister, Selma Jones, who was riding with him at the time of the crash suffered life-threatening injuries. The passenger in Thie's minivan, 29-year-old Derek Guindon, also suffered life-threatening injuries, but no updates were available on their conditions Monday night.
