Drivers Deal With Changing Road Conditions

February 28, 2012, 5:53 PM by Kelly Bartnick

Drivers Deal With Changing Road Conditions
MOODY COUNTY, SD -

It all begins with rain. The first step of a storm expected to settle over much of South Dakota moved in by early morning. The weather disrupted work for Don Edinger, who was headed south from Summit.

"(The roads are) okay. Dry until I got to Brookings," Edinger, who drives truck for a living, said.

Once he reached Brookings, below-freezing temperatures and consistent rain made for some slick spots that continued on Interstate 29 in and around Sioux Falls. Edinger said the icy conditions and drivers mixed like oil and water.

"A lot of people don't know how to drive," Edinger said, "That's the biggest thing. One's going too slow. The other is going too fast."

Even with all the water on the roadways, traffic was moving pretty quickly by noon. That is, unless you drove out of town, where the roads were slippery in spots. Edinger, a North Dakota native, says even with the pending storm, this winter and its weather is one for the record books.

"This winter's wonderful. Just wonderful!" Edinger exclaimed.

But wait a day for Mother Nature to settle in, and you might have a different opinion.

There is more danger for freezing conditions as the temperatures fall Tuesday night into Wednesday, which could make for a slick morning commute.
