Road Closure Alert System Online

February 28, 2012, 6:00 PM by Peggy Moyer

Road Closure Alert System Online
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

When South Dakota roads are at their worst, you can have the information at your finger tips.

ClearPath 511 is a new alert system designed to keep you informed and safe on the state's roads. And with the approaching winter storm, the timing couldn’t be better for South Dakota travelers.

"Once this weather hits, they will really see the benefits of these alerts," South Dakota Department of Transportation public information officer Kristi Sandal said.

The State of South Dakota has invested in a new road conditions alert system, called ClearPath 511.

"We're getting accurate, up-to-the-minute information from the people who are out in the weather and on the highways," Sandal said.

And when the conditions get so bad that roads have to be closed or no travel is advised, ClearPath 511 is going to send that information to your phone or your computer.

The new service works in conjunction with the SafeTravel USA website, which shows you current road conditions. ClearPath 511 takes it to the next level. You chose which roads you want to be notified about and then when conditions trigger a closure or a no travel advisory is issued, the system sends you an alert.

"Road closures will be automatic. So if you've chosen I-90, if there's a road closure on I-90, you'll automatically get that," Sandal said.

And for some who make their living on the road, ClearPath 511 saves time and money.

"If you got shut down for a day, you could lose out on a load. You could lose $8,000 to $10,000 by missing a load," Texas truck driver Billy Cole said.

Drivers have the option of receiving their alerts via email, text or both.

South Dakota's DOT announced the service last Thursday and already, nearly 700 people have signed up.
