NAWIC Spreads Cheer To People Without Families

NAWIC Spreads Cheer To People Without Families
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Christmas can be a difficult time for people who no longer have family to share the holidays.

But one association is remembering those with developmental disabilities who would otherwise be forgotten.

Under a tree are presents for people helped by South Dakota Achieve, a non-profit supporting people with various degrees of developmental disabilities. But until the National Association of Women in Construction or NAWIC stepped in, some people without families would be overlooked this Christmas.

"It's really what Christmas is all about, remembering those who don't have," Organizer Jan Feterl said.

Organizer Jan Feterl says instead of giving gifts to each other, NAWIC decided to help those who didn't have families within the South Dakota Achieve network this year. One of the recipients is a woman with a developmental disability who will get three gifts on Sunday bought just for her.

"The best thing was, we were able to give specifics on her likes and interests and they were able to fulfill things specific to what she enjoys," South Dakota Achieve Coordinator of Support Services Melissa Chesshir said.

In all, NAWIC helped 18 people with South Dakota Achieve and based on the requested gifts, the givers oftentimes bonded with the recipients.

"One of the individuals had asked for some Disney movies and one of our members of the NAWIC group is big into Disney. She had the whole collection of Disney DVDs and she gave that whole collection to the individual," Feterl said.

And while the gifts may be big or small, it is something that keeps the spirit of Christmas alive for those who don't have any family to share it with.

"I hope that they feel that someone beyond the folks here at Achieve, that there is someone out there in the community that has thought about them and that they feel that love," Feterl said.

NAWIC hopes to help South Dakota Achieve again next year.
