Five Diet Foods You Should Be Eating
SIOUX FALLS, SD - If you struggle to lose a few pounds, you may be approaching your diet all wrong. That's because many people focus on the number of calories they're eating instead of whether the food they eat makes them feel full.

The options are endless at many KELOLAND grocery stores. So, deciding what food to eat can be difficult.

"It's always fruits and vegetables and then fish oils," shopper Edwin Carias said.

But when on a diet, you should eat more than fruits and vegetables. We asked Avera Heart Hospital Dietitian Joanne Shearer to sift through the grocery aisles and come up with the top five foods you should eat when on a diet. Number one: eggs.

"One research study showed that women who ate an egg breakfast lost 65 percent more weight than women who ate an equivalent amount of calories from a bagel," Shearer said.

Number two: Shearer says low fat milk and yogurt are important because they help reduce belly fat while preserving muscle mass. These dairy foods are also essential for healthy bones.

"This is one thing that women particularly tend to cut out of their diet if they're trying to cut down on calories. That's the wrong approach because the calcium and Vitamin D in dairy will help with maintaining bone density," Shearer said.

One food that may surprise you that's good when you're on a diet is extra virgin olive oil. Shearer says an idea is to mix this with lemon juice or balsamic vinegar for a salad dressing.

"This is one food you definitely don't want to cut out of your diet. Olive oil not only adds great flavor and enjoyment to food, but it can actually help with your weight-loss efforts," Shearer said.

Beans and lentils are also helpful in losing weight because they slow down the emptying of your stomach, which causes you to feel full longer. Nuts and seeds fight hunger pains. Shearer recommends eating a handful for a snack.

"What foods are going to make you feel fuller longer? That is an important strategy in the long-term for being able to lose weight and keep it off," Shearer said.

While Shearer did not include fruits and vegetables in her list, she stresses that they are important when eating healthy and trying to lose weight.
