Dining With A Heart Healthy Menu

March 14, 2011, 6:10 PM by Kelli Grant

Dining With A Heart Healthy Menu
SIOUX FALLS, SD - If you're watching what you eat because you're taking extra steps to protect your heart, three restaurants in Sioux Falls want to help you out.

Tre Lounge, CJ Callaway’s, and Foleys restaurant have teamed up with Sanford Health to promote a heart healthy menu.

Shrimp, a Caesar wrap, or how about a mango chicken sandwich?  They're all on the menu at CJ Callaway’s and they're all good for your heart.

“If a restaurant would prompt me and expose me to different menu items, whether it be labeling or the features, I think it just helps plant that seed that, ‘Hey, I can eat a little bit healthier today,’” Vice President at Pinnacle Hospitality, Inc. Randy Derheim said.

Callaway's is one of three Sioux Falls restaurants that were guided by Sanford Health and came up with a heart healthy menu. Some of the items already existed, but kitchen teams also got the chance to be creative.

“They took our existing menu and they helped identify current items that we could label as heart healthy. So within our properties we actually put heart stickers or heart stamps on the different menu items to highlight what they were,” Derheim said.

All the designated heart healthy menu items are based on the Mediterranean diet.

“Mediterranean diet emphasizes on getting plenty of exercise, eating healthy, more fruits, vegetables,” Sanford Cardiologist Dr. Maria Stys said.

More fish, less red meat, cooking with olive oil and drinking a glass of red wine.

“The French paradox of drinking red wine in moderation, we've lived by that as well.  We brought in a nice merlot,” Derheim said.

So instead of that white bread, you'll find wheat. And instead of fried, you'll find baked or grilled. A meal that has your heart in mind.

“I think fundamentally it's a really smart thing for us to do and others in our industry.  Clearly, it's top of mind right now in the consumer and the way that they're looking at their dining habits whether it be in our restaurants or others,” Derheim said.
