Mt. Lion Killed After It Kills

December 8, 2010, 10:03 PM by Austin Hoffman

Mt. Lion Killed After It Kills
RAPID CITY, SD - Officials with Game Fish & Parks killed another mountain lion this week near Rapid City. But not before the cat got its kill.

When Susan Goodwin woke up Monday morning, it was to something she never wanted to see.

"I looked back in the pen and saw the legs sticking straight out and I had seen that before a couple of years ago and it just threw me. I was probably what you might call hysterical," Goodwin said.

Game Fish and Parks officials believe a mountain lion killed two of Goodwin's three miniature ponies less than 75 yards from her front door. The lone survivor is now penned up in her back yard.

The GF&P brought in a tracker to follow the lion, but the trail went cold. But they had a plan on how to keep the cat from coming back for the third pony.

"They decided to set a trap because they decided that was the culprit and they were gonna catch him in a trap," Goodwin said.

When the Game Fish and Parks returned Tuesday morning they say the lion was in the trap, but not for long.

"I did pull out so we had a short pursuit and treed the lion and euthanized it," John Kanta with the Game Fish and Parks said.

John Kanta with the Game Fish and Parks said when any lion is a public safety issue they have to kill it.

"The way we look at it is if the lion is bold enough to come into the yard, in this case, and kill these horses in close proximity to humans, we consider that a public safety issue as well as damage to property," Kanta said.

And while they believe the lion responsible for killing the ponies is dead, it hasn't been easy for Goodwin.

"The ponies, being the, particularly the size they are, become a pet. They're like your dog and you see them every day," Goodwin said.

Which is something she hopes will continue now that a mountain lion isn't on the prowl in her back yard.

This isn't the first time Goodwin has lost a pony. Two years ago someone shot and killed two of them. One of the ponies killed by the mountain lion was a gift from friend to replace that previous loss.
