SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Avera Heart Hospital has received an honor that should make patients feel like they're in good hands.
Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota has been named one of the nation's 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals
by Thomson Reuters. And the hospital's President and CEO says for patients that means shorter hospital stays, lower costs and overall better outcomes.
And the hospital is in good company. Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic are also named in the top 50. The study shows that 96 percent of cardiovascular inpatients survive, around 93 percent remain complication-free and fewer patients are re-admitted to the hospital in the 30 days after they go home. Thomson Reuters says if all cardiovascular providers performed at the level of this year's winners, more than 75 hundred additional lives could be saved.
"We've received the award 4 years in a row for top 100 and this year the people decided they were going to make it tougher and so there's only 50 hospitals that they recognize in the country," said Avera Heart Hospital CEO & President Jon Soderholm.
Avera Heart Hospital was selected from just more than 1,000 U.S. hospitals.
