PIERRE, SD -
The South Dakota Board of Regents says the Opportunity Scholarship program has helped better prepare high school students for college and reduced the number who need remedial help at state universities.
The program offers up to $5,000 in financial aid over four years to students who take rigorous courses in high school and score at least 24 on the ACT.
Regents say the number of public university students who require remedial work in mathematics dropped by 8 percent since the scholarship program started in 2004, while remedial work in English declined by 3 percent.
