KELOLAND TV/Argus Leader Poll: Smoking Ban

April 6, 2010, 4:00 PM

KELOLAND TV/Argus Leader Poll: Smoking Ban
South Dakota lawmakers passed a smoking ban in 2009 and Governor Mike Rounds signed the measure. But opponents gathered enough signatures to put the ban to a public vote in November.

Now it's up to South Dakota voters whether to snuff out smoking in bars, video lottery establishments and casinos.

KELOLAND TV and the Argus Leader conducted a poll asking 800 registered voters in Sioux Falls about city and state issues.

We asked people how they would vote on Referred Law 12 if the election were held today.  Two-thirds of respondents say they would vote for the smoking ban, while only a third of those polled say they would vote against the proposed law.

The chart below gives a breakdown of the results:

Referred Law 12 will appear on the statewide November general election ballot. It would prohibit smoking tobacco or carrying lighted tobacco products in all public places, including bars, casinos and restaurants. If you were voting on this referendum question today, would you vote:

City Men Women Democrat Republican Independent
"YES" 66% 66% 66% 71% 63% 65%
"NO" 32% 31% 33% 27% 35% 31%
UNDECIDED 2% 3% 1% 2% 2% 4%
